Elounda, Spinalonga and the bay of Mirabello are located in the eastern part of Crete, near Agios Nikolaos and about an hour from the capital Heraklion with its airport.
This part of Crete is an unusual and delightful mix of luxury resorts and untouched nature, authentic villages and fascinating history.
Elounda often hosts heads of state and celebrities in the 5 and 6 star hotels built on the seashore with private beaches and coves, surrounded by luxurious yachts.
However, this does not mean that it is closed to normal visitors and tourists who want to visit it.
Elounda main beach is lovely, and fully serviced with sunbeds and umbrellas, cafes and tavernas nearby. In front of the islet of Kolokytha is the beach of the same name, also called Saint Luca beach due to the church nearby. The beach is not organized and there are only a couple of trees for shade.
Driros Beach overlooks the island of Spinalonga. It enjoys the shade of pine trees and the sand is fantastic. It is an organized beach with activities and water sports. The clean pebble beaches of Plaka offer magnificent waters and the view of Kalydon Island. Plaka is a picturesque village with lovely old houses and traditional taverns.
This part of the Cretan coast is remarkable and it is worth trying a boat trip to better appreciate the beauty of the Mirabello bay.
The area is also very famous for those who want to practice diving, with the availability of numerous centers and instructors.
