Crete has three airports: Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport (HER), Chania Ioannis Daskalogiannis International Airport (CHQ) and the small domestic Sitia Airport (JSH).

The most important airport on the island is Heraklion International Airport (HER) which is located just 4 kilometers from the center of the main city of Crete. Although for years the project of the new and more modern airport that will have to replace it has been discussed, since today the greatest number of flights and destinations from/to the island of Crete pass through here. Considering the age of the project, the extreme proximity to the city and the ever increasing flow of people, you can imagine how this airport is today inadequate and overcrowded during the high season (and beyond). Road traffic in its surroundings is obviously also affected. The central position of Heraklion in the island makes it the most versatile airport for reaching various destinations, and especially those in the central and eastern part of the island.

The second international airport on the island is the very important Chania Souda Airport (CHQ). Recently modernized (including a large new duty free shop), it is about 15 kilometers from the city and thus not directly affected by rush hour traffic. Main airlines, low cost and charter flights to various European destinations and beyond make it a stopover to be taken into consideration especially if your final destination is in the western or central/western part of the island.

The small airport of Sitia (JSH) is a national airport with a very limited flight schedule. You can check if it is right for you if you are located in the easternmost part of the island.
