Located on the southeast coast of Crete, Ierapetra is often considered the southernmost city in Europe and the sunniest tourist resort on the continent, given the very little rain and mild temperatures even in winter.
In Ierapetra you will find superb beaches on the beautiful Libyan Sea and centuries of historical and religious heritage, with an ancient Venetian fortress, several monasteries and churches, a small museum and beautiful architecture in the old part of the city.
The city is located about 30 km south of Agios Nikolaos and almost 100 km southeast of the capital.
The main beach of Koutsounari is located right next to the port and is a large, well organized black pebble beach, quite crowded in the high season. There are also other beaches on the city waterfront.
In the historic center of Kato Mera, there is a small building known as Napoleon’s House, as according to a local legend, the emperor stayed here during one of his trips to Egypt.
The old fortress of Ierapetra near the ancient port was built at the beginning of Venetian rule over Crete and subsequently renovated in 1626 following an earthquake.
The Ottoman Mosque built in the late 19th century as the church of Agios Ioannis, which the Turks transformed into a mosque. The minaret underwent restoration in 1953 and dominates the whole area. Right in front of the mosque is a beautiful fountain also dating back to the Ottoman period.
The mosque has now been converted into a music school.
Ierapetra is known to tourists mainly as a port for boats that reach daily the island of Chrissi. However, our suggestion remains to consider it as a destination for a trip or stay in the area!
