Our impressions
The village of Zakros is located on the east coast of Crete, about 40 kilometers south-east of Sitia and about 170 kilometers from the capital of Heraklion. Although the village is quite remote, there are many amenities available which make it a great holiday destination.
Zakros is divided into the modern upper Epano Zakros and the ancient Kato Zakros, with the ancient palace and the beautiful beach. The two parts are connected through an impressive canyon known as the “Gorge of the Dead”.
The enchanting Kato Zakros beach is very protected by the bay. It is primarily a pebble beach with some rocks in place and the waters are extremely calm, making it the perfect summer destination. It is a wonderful place to try snorkeling and spear fishing. There are a few villas and tavernas along the beach, but apart from that, most of the amenities are found in the modern village of Zakros.
Zakros is an excellent choice, offering an unforgettable experience for people looking for the most authentic and inspiring places in Crete. It remains peaceful, even in August.
